Dr. Robert G. Uzzo is vice chairman of Fox Chase Cancer Center’s department of surgical oncology and a tenured member of the staff. He has also served as acting chairman of the department since Jan. 1, 2008. His interests focus on treatment for kidney, prostate, testicular and bladder cancers and procedures for urinary diversion. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is skilled in minimally invasive procedures, including pure laparoscopic and robotic surgery for kidney, prostate and bladder cancers. He also heads a laboratory studying molecular mechanisms of genitourinary cancers. Nationally known as a leader in urologic oncology, Uzzo is a principal investigator for an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group trial to evaluate targeted therapies for kidney cancers. A co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and text chapters, he has presented hundreds of regional, national and international lectures. Through an accelerated six-year program, Uzzo earned his B.S. summa cum laude at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., and his M.D. at Cornell University Medical College in New York City. As a senior medical student, he studied pediatric kidney problems (nephrology) at Guy’s Hospital in London, England, and spent two months studying at Russia’s Urologic Institute of Moscow. Uzzo completed his internship and residency in surgery at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center. He continued his residency in urology at Cornell and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, serving as chief resident in New York Hospital’s department of urology. He also served as ship’s physician for a six-week explorer expedition to Antarctica. Uzzo’s honors include the American Association of Cancer Research’s 1999 Young Investigator Award. At the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, he was a fellow in urologic oncology and an American Foundation for Urologic Diseases scholar. Subsequently, he completed an additional fellowship in renal transplantation and renovascular surgery before joining Fox Chase in 2000.
